Aging Professional Development

GWEP, a program of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), enhances the capacity of the health care workforce to serve older adults. NASW is a longtime advocate for GWEP. In June 2019, HRSA awarded GWEP grants to 48 sites across 35 states, Puerto Rico, and Guam. At least five sites (Louisiana State University, Northeast Ohio Medical University, Rush University Medical Center, University of Montana, and University of Southern Indiana) feature social workers in leadership roles. Social workers both provide and obtain continuing education at GWEP sites. Check the list of grantees (which includes 15 GWEP sites in 10 states that received no-cost extensions through June 2020) to find a site near you.

SLA Principles is designed for current or aspiring supervisors who wish to enhance their gerontological knowledge,  supervision skills, and leadership ability. Piloted by NASW in a live, site-based format with support from the John A. Hartford Foundation, SLA improves the delivery of health care and social services to older adults and their families. This certificate program, which is supported by the John A. Hartford Foundation, improves the delivery of health care and social services to older adults by strengthening the supervision of staff providing direct social services. SLA features five days of interactive training (May 3–5 and May 17–18), for which 30 continuing education units—including 3 hours of ethics—are awarded. The application deadline is April 26, unless available program slots are filled before that date.
