The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is removing Social Security numbers from Medicare cards. New Medicare cards will be mailed between April 2018 and April 2019; each card will include a Medicare number unique to the beneficiary. This publication equips social workers to communicate with beneficiaries about the upcoming change.

The Jimmo v. Sebelius settlement deemed inappropriate use of an “improvement standard” for Medicare coverage of occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech–language pathology, and skilled nursing services.
