President Jimmy Carter

NASW mourned the death of former President Jimmy Carter, the nation’s 39th president, who was in office from 1977 to 1981.

Carter, who died on Dec. 29, 2024, at 100 years old, was a champion of human rights and social justice. His leadership, during and after his presidency, exemplified a deep commitment to uplifting marginalized communities and addressing critical social issues.

“President Jimmy Carter’s legacy is a testament to the power of servant leadership and unwavering dedication to social justice,” said NASW CEO Anthony Estreet, PhD, MBA, LCSW-C. “He embodied the core values of social work, from his commitment to eradicating poverty to his relentless advocacy for human rights across the globe. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the profession of social work and society.”

NASW President Yvonne Chase said Carter’s work with Habitat for Humanity “reflected his enduring belief in the power of communities and his hands-on approach to addressing housing insecurity. He inspired generations of social workers to pursue solutions rooted in empathy, dignity, and respect for all people—but most of all to lead in action.
