In Brief

NASW acknowledges that Donald J. Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States in the Nov. 5 general election. The association noted it is deeply troubled by statements Trump has made regarding immigrants, women, people who are LGBTQIA2S+, and people of color—and that it will challenge any of his policies that harm the nation’s most vulnerable populations.

“We believe that regardless of political affiliation, our primary focus must remain on meeting the needs of individuals and communities,” said NASW CEO Anthony Estreet, PhD, MBA, LCSW-C. “NASW’s mission is to ensure social workers can effectively serve their clients, and we will continue to advocate for access to essential resources and services.”

NASW said in a statement it is committed to advocating for policies that uphold social justice principles, supporting people who are marginalized, and strengthening the social safety net for the many constituencies social workers serve.
