There are some unsettling statistics in this issue of Social Work Advocates. The cover story on intimate partner violence says one in five American homicide victims dies at the hand of an intimate partner, according to the CDC. For American women alone, the figures are even worse. More than half who die by homicide are killed by men who are or were their intimate partners. Our article examines the reasons people perpetrate violence against their partners, as well as the different methods they use.
The feature article about veterans suicide prevention says 17 veterans die by suicide every day. The article notes that social workers play integral roles in helping prevent veteran suicide—and in working with their families.
Also concerning—for many—is the outcome of the Nov. 5 presidential election, which we learned as we were nearing the end of the production cycle for this issue of the magazine. NASW released a statement saying it is disappointed that Donald Trump will be the next president of the U.S., mainly because of remarks he has made about the vulnerable populations social workers care about—and things he has vowed to do as president that could harm those populations.
Read a response from NASW President Yvonne Chase and look for more related content in 2025. In the meantime, please take care of yourselves.
Until next year,
