Social workers in any role and setting may encounter people who experience elder abuse or who engage in abusive behavior toward older adults. They play integral roles in developing, implementing and strengthening social supports that help prevent and address elder abuse.

To aid social workers in this effort, NASW Senior Practice Associate Chris Herman has produced “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2023: Building Strong Support for Elders.”

The article includes resources from the federally funded National Center on Elder Abuse (for which NASW serves on the advisory board), NASW, and other organizations to support social work for elder justice throughout the year. It concludes with an invitation for members to tell NASW the ways in which they are working to respond to and prevent elder abuse.
