NASW Texas shocked, saddened by shooting at elementary school in Uvalde
AUSTIN, TEXAS —The National Association of Social Workers Texas Chapter is shocked and saddened to hear of the shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, TX today. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and everyone present at the school, in addition to the surrounding community.
We hope that mental health providers are on hand to offer support and care to anyone involved as well as the greater Uvalde community. Schools should be safe, supportive havens for students, and we are appalled that anyone would target this space with an act of violence.
We encourage the Texas legislature to review the steps it takes to obtain a firearm in Texas, and explore all avenues that strengthen school safety and help prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), in Washington, DC, is the largest membership organization of professional social workers. It promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers. NASW also seeks to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, and communities through its advocacy.
