President Biden Takes Swift, Transformative Executive Actions

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Washington, DC – The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is thrilled with the immediate, decisive steps the Biden-Harris administration has taken to address head-long the many challenges facing our nation.

Within just three days of his inauguration, President Biden issued 30 executive actions that will not only dismantle devastating policies of the prior administration but accelerate our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. He has prioritized the health and safety of workers and paused federal student loan payments and interest until October 2021. He has restored hope and stability for immigrants, including “Dreamers”, and lifted up millions of people struggling with food insecurity or facing eviction due to the pandemic.

He has laid the foundation for a long-overdue $15/hour national minimum wage and ensured that the federal government will enforce federal law prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. And he has reversed a harmful ban on transgender people serving in the military.

“President Biden has demonstrated the new administration’s earnest commitment to advancing the well-being of all Americans,” said Mildred “Mit” Joyner, DPS, MSW, LCSW, NASW President. “These policy actions will strengthen all communities and uplift the lives of those who are vulnerable or marginalized. NASW will advance these policies into action and looks forward with great anticipation to the further bold steps by the President to create a more just, inclusive and equitable society”.
