New Courses Available

NASW has new Lunchtime and Specialty Practice Sections webinars, as well as a new WebEd course available.

“An Advanced Course in Ethics and Malpractice Risk for Social Workers” is the latest WebEd course for members.

Members who successfully complete an online exam will receive 3.0 CEs.

The course was funded by NASW Assurance Services Inc. and created by the NASW Office of Ethics and Professional Review with support from the NASW Legal Defense Fund. The authors explain that the 21st century has brought a renewed focus on professional ethics.

“An increase in public awareness and accountability has forced licensed professionals to pay more attention to their ethical responsibility,” the course outline says. “Social workers are expected to maintain high standards of ethical conduct by providing the optimal level of service based on skillful practice.”

The advanced course will identify steps in making ethical decisions by incorporating the application of an ethical decision-making framework. It also provides information and tools for managing risks.

NASW’s latest Lunchtime Webinar is scheduled from 1-2 p.m. ET Oct. 5. The course, “HIPAA and Mental Health Privacy: What Social Workers Need to Know,” will be presented by Sherri Morgan, associate counsel for NASW’s Legal Defense Fund and Office of Ethics and Professional Review.

This program will review the basics of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy and security regulations. It will also provide an overview of the recent changes to HIPAA as amended by the HITECH Act. The course offers the opportunity to earn 1.0 CE.

NASW Specialty Practice Sections has new Webinars this fall. Each course offers 1.0 CE.

“Understanding the ‘Hook’: Strategies for Gambling Addiction Prevention and Intervention” will be presented from 1-2 p.m. ET Oct. 26 by Jody Becthold, who will discuss how the gaming industry continues to experience growth at national and state levels. The expansion of gambling, however, has not been met with a similar rise in prevention and treatment services and funding. The webinar will offer participants an opportunity to learn the “hook” of gambling and what makes some people become addicted. Resources for education, awareness and treatment will also be discussed.

“Discovering ‘What Works’ in Managing Eating Disorder Treatment Challenges” will take place from 1-2 p.m. ET Nov. 16. The course is presented by Abigail Natenshon, who says that eating disorders are among the most misunderstood and underdiagnosed mental health disorders. Participants will learn what sets eating disorder treatment apart from genetic practice.
