To provide Subject Matter Expertise on all areas of the Social Work Profession in order to support Professional and Workforce Development initiatives. Reporting to the Director, Professional and Workforce Development, this individual identifies, develops and implements education programs for the profession; responsible for NASW CE review program, manages review process, and evaluates third party programs to verify eligibility and award number and type of Social Work CEUs; maintains relationship with internal and external subject matter experts to support NASW Professional Development programs; verify eligibility of NASW Credentials candidates; manages and guides work of all committees engaged by the Professional Development Department, including the Competence Certification Commission and The Specialty Practice Sections Committees; serves as a resource both internally and externally to the association for projects related to the practice areas. Work activities are performed under general supervision.


  1. Routinely completes professional-level review of external applicants for credentials (individuals) and continuing education approval (organizations) to ensure compliance with published NASW standards as applied to the area of certification.
  2. Systematically collects, analyzes, and prepares evidence-based practice educational programming for social workers, policy makers, organizations, and the public through written, oral, and online presentation formats. Establishes relationship and rapport with the learning audience through social media. Conducts analysis of learning outcomes and quality indicators. Actively participates and informs the development and coordination of practice materials and position papers as assigned.
  3. Produces quality course content to enrich the association knowledge network. Identifies and cluster existing resources within the association, its chapters, and the membership through collaboration with internal and external subject matter experts, and academic and technology resources. Lends expertise and direction to both recorded and live presentation formats.
  4. Prepares learning applications and evaluation activities that accurately reflect the stated learning objectives and reflects the application of newly acquired knowledge or skill enhancement.
  5. Provides staff support for the competence Certification Commission and other relevant Board appointed committees as assigned in accordance with strategic plan parameters.
  6. Interprets legislative and regulatory issues in emerging areas of licensure, and continuing competency, and provides NASW prospective on these efforts to other professional and policy-making communities.
  7. Systematically develops, solicits, manages and disseminates social work content to social workers in NASW specialty practice sections through a variety of media - written, oral, and electronic. Serves as a presenter as needed. Works with writers; develops/coordinates timely production of multiple newsletters, bulletins, and other practice material. Works with leadership committees to assure adherence to timelines and guidelines for development of specialty practice sections products.
  8. Represents social workers in a variety of contexts. Engages other like-minded organizations / professionals as needed. Serves as liaison between the specialty practice sections committees' leadership and NASW management. Moderates specialty practice sections webinars as needed. Primary contact and coordinator for specialty practice sections leadership calls.
  9. Contributes to the development of practice standards commensurate with professional practice expertise and experience. Collaborates with other relevant offices to implement these standards. Assists in the development and implementation of advanced practice credentials in specific fields of practice.
  10. Contributes to the marketing strategy of member recruitment and engagement by promoting NASW products and services through the Career Center, Professional Education, Professional Credentials, Live events, etc.
  11. Engages in professional outreach and response. Incorporates the acquired information into agenda setting and product design.
  12. Provides support for legislative and regulatory activities as needed.
  13. Participates in the development of proposals for program grants and contracts that enhance programs direction.

  1. Requires social work experience in a variety of settings and roles; analytical ability and ability to work collaboratively and effectively with members, leaders, and volunteers.
  2. Must have interpersonal skills and have the ability to work well with others at all levels of the organization.
  3. Have strong public speaking skills as well as research and assessment skills and the ability to summarize information into clear, organized, factually sound, persuasive, and objective reports in multiple formats.
  4. Must be flexible, capable of multi-tasking, and able to adapt to multiple priorities while meeting deadlines.
  5. Must be able to work independently and with limited supervision in fast-paced environment
  6. Comfortable with utilizing cutting-edge technologies to support NASW initiatives.

  1. Master's Degree in Social Work with licensure at the clinical level is required.
  2. Requires a minimum of five years post-MSW direct practice social work experience.
  3. Prefer two years' experience preparing/presenting written and web-based training materials focused on the adult professional audience.
  4. Requires considerable knowledge of the NASW Code of Ethics, and NASW standards for professional development.
  5. Requires knowledge of office procedures and clerical practices sufficient to perform duties.
  6. Requires strong knowledge of grammar, spelling, punctuation and required formats sufficient to draft original correspondence, minutes of meetings and reports.
  7. Working knowledge of content and article review process preferred.
  8. Familiarity with adult learning theories, social learning concepts and strategies, and technological resources for both in-person and distance learning.
